What does off-axis microphone placement mean?

There are various ways to place a microphone in front of you:

  1. On-axis
  2. Off-axis

On-axis means the microphone is directly in front of your mouth, like a singer.

Off-axis means the microphone is pointed at your mouth, but slightly off to the side. To achieve the best results, experiment with placement as this technique can very from microphone to microphone.

The main benefit to an off-axis microphone (within regards to voice over talents specifically) are:

  1. Reduction (if not elimination) of plosives
  2. Being able to see the copy/script in front of you
  3. Better Instagram selfies
